Johnny Michael King was into music right from an early age. At the age of seven Johnny started playing an old acoustic guitar that was left to him by his grandfather. He was hooked, he would run home from school to play that guitar every day. After a few years mom and dad were reassured about his devotion to music and bought him a new acoustic guitar for Christmas, which didn’t last long, it ended up being wore out in just a few years from being played so much. At age 11 things changed forever, all the bands Johnny would work with always needed a bass player, which is why he switched over to playing bass, creating that big low end wall of sound. He worked hard finding that sound, finger techniques, strings, pickups, basses and of course amps. Johnny also had many influences such as Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Jaco Pastorious, Jack Bruce, Stu Hamm, Tommy Shannon, Tony Levin, Nathan East, Tony Franklin, Marcus Miller and long time friend Johnny B. Gayden. You can hear in his playing style how these world re-known players influenced him, from his melodic and walking bass lines to being able to tear up the fretboard when the opportunity presents itself. Blues and Jazz is where his heart is and always has been, even though in his early years he was sidetracked playing rock. Over the last several years Johnny has also added playing a fretless bass to his lineup creating yet another unique sound to his playing style. After hearing Tony Franklin’s fretless bass work on “The Firms” first two albums and of course we cannot forget Jaco Pastorious, he just had to have that alternative sound.
Johnny exclusively uses Warmoth 4 string basses, EBS Uni Chorus, EBS Bass IQ, EBS pedals, Rotosound Swing Bass Strings on his fretted bass & La Bella Deep Talkin’ 1954 Jamerson strings on his fretless bass, Eden WT-550 head paired with a Eden 210XLT & Eden 410XST cabinet and a Hartke 1155 combo for the smaller venues.

Reichlin Small was bitten by the music bug early in life; music was always in the house, and when he was four, he started playing piano and, oddly enough, the recorder! He gave that up quickly, but stayed with piano and added clarinet to his bustling arsenal, which he played for 14 years. Doing classical and pops and popular music was the joy of his childhood until he was swayed by rock and country and jazz by way of the guitar. Rich fell initially for artists such as Glenn Campbell, James Taylor, Roy Clark, Eddie Van Halen, Jose Feliciano & (again, oddly enough) Stevie Wonder, who captured much of his musical imagination. He studies music intensely to this day and is ("silently") adding the violin and mandolin to his arsenal of instrumental attack weapons.
Reichlin's choice of guitars generally swings between Strats and his own line of guitars which he builds himself. |
